I'm amazed at the quality of birds exhibited at the UFPA shows. I've been trying to find standard cochins or brahmas to purchase and haven't had a lot of luck. It seems that the birds I have purchased from hatcheries in the past can't compare to the quality of birds produced by local breeders. Are you aware of a hatchery that has good quality birds, or of a local breeder that sells standard cochins or brahmas?

Does anyone have a Welsummer pullet/chick I could buy at the March show?

Elton: Lee Barnes use to have Black large fowl Cochins. I'm not sure of Brahmas. But you can check at the show.

Russ: I have not seen any except in the hatchery catalogs.

Thank you all for an incredible show. This was a great first experience for our family. We learned alot and had a wonderful time.
I do have a question about where (& what) to get powder(?) for mites and lice. And any advice on how to treat our flock would be appreciated. I will be hatching some eggs soon and need to know what to vaccinate for and how. I learn best by watching/doing and would like to have someone show me what to do the first time.
By the way, I found some
Welsummers and also got some hatching eggs from a guy in West Warren.

morrell's : a egg is a egg no matter what species produce's it.
Depending on what stage the embryo's in you could just pluck it out and use the rest.
Some Asian clutures eat unhatch duck embryo's.

WE HAVE A SMALL FLOCK OF CHICKENS AND PURCHASED A FEW YOUNG CHICKENS AT THE DAVIS COUNTY FAIR LAST YEAR TO ADD TO OUR FLOCK. ONE OF THEM TURNED OUT TO BE A ROOSTER.. WE ALREADY HAVE A ROOSTER IN OUR FLOCK AND THIS EXTRA ONE IS CAUSING ALL KINDS OF PROBLEMS. ALMOST ALL OUR HENS ARE LOOKING PRETTY BEAT UP FROM THIS ROOSTER. IS THERE ANYONE THAT COULD USE A ROOSTER. HE'S A BEAUTIFUL HEALTHY CHICKEN WE JUST NEED TO FIND A NEW HOME FOR HIM. ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANK YOU

It doesn't look like anyone has been here for some time. Is this blog still active? Is the UFPA planning a show this spring? I never saw an answer to the question about vaccination. Does anyone vaccinate and for what?

Anonymous said...

Maverickqueen: UFPA next show is in March on the second weekend.

Vaccination varies depending on what you what to protect against on what you need to doctor in your flock.

Hi I am looking for someone that raises and sells Cochin Bantams locally. Preferably in the Salt Lake City area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kimmi: Right off the top of my head I can't think of anyone. You could check with Lee barnes to see if he has any idea. People have over the years changed their breeds of chickens I just cant say.
You coulf come to the Feb. Club meeeting and ask there.

I work for a local non-profit Wasatch Community Gardens. And, I am looking for someone who is very knowledgeable on chicken care to co-present a urban chicken keeping workshop in June. We have a whole week dedicated to Urban Chickens including our Urban Chicken Workshop, and Early Bird Brunch (fundraiser) hosted at Squatters and a Tour de Coops (a self-guided tour throughout the city of backyard coops). We usually have 100-150 show up to the workshop and would love to have a real chicken care expert to present. Any ideas?
Also, we are still looking for coop owners with interesting or unique flocks. Contact me at outreach@wasatchgardens.org if you are interested.

I am just starting. I was told by county I met the requirements, to build the coop/pen, submit a permit request, get inspected and approved, then pay for the permit of $5/bird. I am half way done. I live in the unincorporated county adjacent to Sandy City. I am interested in getting 5 hens; Araucanas or Ameracaunas. What are the pros & cons of both? I understand the Araucanas have bluer eggs and the Ameracaunas eggs are duller but they are meatier. I don't want to start with chicks but pullets (which I understand are less than 1 year) or as young as possible but self reliant. Who may I contact about purchasing such birds? What is the best feed for layers and where can I purchase? I hope to join this club but only after I have gained a little more experience. Thank you. Kim
